Scotland Beach Soccer - Development Project
St Andrews in Fife, Scotland became the host of the first ever Scottish Beach Soccer project to hit the stunning shores of the east coast.
With a fantastic coast line and with the Fife area holding five of Scotland’s six blue flag beaches, St Andrews looks to be an ideal location for a new era of beach soccer in Scotland.
St Andrews is more commonly known for its golf, as it is where the game of golf originated. More sporting history was made this weekend (15th, 16th & 17th August) as St Andrews held Scotland’s first ever Beach Soccer education courses and coaching.
Friday and Saturday saw EBS coaches conduct two Introductory courses into beach soccer, with class room and practical coaching sessions out on the sand being held over the two days.
The courses were attended by a variety of students, both girls and boys from many different areas of Fife. Students were educated and coached into beach soccer with the EBS introductory award, which focuses on many aspects of the sport.
Sunday saw Scotland stage its first ever official games on the beaches of West Sands, culminating in a final between local players and TIBLYCI, a team who had travelled all the way from the Czech Republic to compete in this event.
The final was played to a good standard with many goals being scored, with the game going to penalties after a 10v10 draw in open play, resulting with the strong Czech team TIBLYCI winning 5v2.
So it was TIBLYCI a Czech Republic side who were crowned West Sands Champions but the real winner was FIFE, who with local Beach Coastal Officer Robbie Blyth looking to stage more education courses and tournaments for both youth and senior players beach soccer, could become part of the local community and country in time.
And maybe St Andrews will now home a new sport other than golf, BEACH SOCCER!
