Game 3: Spartans (s) v Knights (k)

August 5^th 2008

Beach Soccer

The winner of this will have a great chance of joining the Bees at Jersey. Rain is in the air and the wind is getting up – this should be a good tight affair.

Period 1:
(k) Bates gets the Knights off to a good start with and early goal - 1-0
(s) Muir from the kick off – Bowes clears off the line.
(s) Bowes brings down Rodrigues – Penalty – goal Rodrigues - 1-1
(s) Bowes and Bates close down Muir and Bowes comes away with the ball, decides to pass back to keeper, Muir intercepts and slots home – 2-1 Spartans lead.
(k) Knights come straight back with Bowes feeding Lee who hits right footed around keeper – goal 2-2.
(k) Bates wins balls on on left and passes to Cully, he jinks past 2 players and rifles home – 3-2 Knights regain the lead.
..but not for long
(s) Muir on half way line goes on a diagonal run past Bates, he gets shot away and inside left hand post – 3-3.


Both teams go close but Period 1 ends with the scores level at 3-3. Despite the worsening weather, no one is leaving as this is entertaining.

Period 2:
(s) Rodrigues brings out a good save at full stretch from Knights keeper Rastall.
(s) Cully wins free kick in own half and sends in a thunderbolt to make it 4 -3 Spartans.
(k) Back come the Knights. Bates takes throw in and finds Cully at near post who tucks it home 4-4.
(k) Eckless fouls Cully and the referee gives a penalty. Cully thumps it down the middle as Keeper dives to his right. Great one handed save with left fist.
(k) Keeper throws to Doherty who shoots from the half way line. This time the keepers fist misses the ball. 5-4 Knights lead.

End of Period 2, Knights lead, but there's plenty of time for a Spartans comeback.


Period 3:
(k) Cully flicks up to Doherty – safely in the hands of the keeper.
(s) Rodrigues with his back to goal, spins and slots home – it's all square 5-5.
(k) Lee flicks over the top and Cully watches it onto his right foot and volleys it home – Knights lead 6-5.
Spartans have a few half chances but Knights extend their lead when Ekless concedes a free kick to Cully. He hits it along the floor and just inside the left hand post.
7-5 Knights – a few minutes are left.
(k) Lee goes close, hitting the post from close range.
(s) Rodrigues is put through but shoots just wide.
(s) Keeper then throws the ball out to himself and runs over the halfway line – his shot is blocked by Doherty.
(k) In the last minute Lee flicks to Locknee and his goalbound effort is somehow clawed away by Sturgess in goal.

Great result for the Knights, with this 7-5 victory enhancing their chances of beating the Spartans to that second spot for the Jersey showdown.
